Et Al
Like the islands themselves, Et Al’s design is a reflection of Hawaii’s diverse cultures. Inspired by the calabash, a product of centuries of cultural exchange and the centerpiece of island gatherings, the design is at once playful and refined, with Japanese, Portuguese, and Hawaiian influences mingling comfortably within the restaurant’s laid-back, Mediterranean interior architecture. Custom palaka upholstery nods to Hawaii’s plantation history while a poured-concrete bar inlaid with gold seams is a reference to kintsugi, the Japanese practice of repairing ceramicware with gold lacquer. Inspired by the ubiquitous lei shops in Honolulu’s Chinatown, the team worked with artists Noa Emberson and Paul Strouse to design custom lei-draped chairs that lend the space a pop of color and an air of perpetual celebration.
